Why did you choose to attend Silver Lake College of the Holy Family?
The reason that I chose to attend Silver Lake College of the Holy Family was due to the class sizes, one-on-one attention of the professors, and the campus size. When I first visited the school, it had a very welcoming atmosphere, and those whom I came into contact with had a nice energy to them that was very appealing to me. In addition to the welcoming atmosphere, it was the people themselves who remembered each student – not just walking past them in the halls, but they would ask how they are they doing, what classes are they taking etc. The psychology program has really nice instructors who are easy to communicate with, so that’s always a plus!
How has financial aid impacted your college experience?
The financial aid that was provided to me by the College has helped to lower the amount of loans that I would have to take out during my time here. It has also helped me to not have to look for an off-campus job to further pay for my degree in addition to my on-campus job. With that being said, I am able to attend most of the events that are held on campus whether that be bingo, DIY Night, Tie-dying t-shirts, etc. Now attending those activities is of course sometimes not possible due to my on-campus job and academics, but many of the activities I enjoy wouldn’t be possible without the help of financial aid and SLC Works.
What will a college degree mean to you?
To me, having a college degree is more about the achievement to further my knowledge. Also, it’s a plus say that I had the opportunity to attend in the first place. When I think about some of the people that I knew in the city, many wished they could attend college to better themselves, but simply they just could not afford to pay for it. In addition, my mother went and graduated from college, so it was always said, “if you put your mind to it, you can do it!” Having that inspiration it made me want to attend even more. Among other things, having a degree would help me financially when I get into my preferred job setting.
Have you learned something during college you didn’t expect?
While attending Silver Lake College of the Holy Family, I have learned that some obstacles have to be overcome and are not ignored. I have also learned that change is good – no matter how big or how small the change is – if it is a good change and can only help you to get better as a person.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to either work for the Milwaukee Public School System as a high school counselor, become a advocate for the LGBTQ+ Community, open my own practice, or open a group home for abandoned and abused young children. I have also recently been thinking about the possibility of pursuing a graduate degree.
